If you're trying to upgrade your computer from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 and the upgrade tool won’t open — don’t worry! This happens because your older computer is missing something called "security settings" that newer tools need to work.
We'll guide you step by step, like a cooking recipe. Just follow along slowly, and we’ll get it fixed together
What We’re Going to Do:Turn on a setting in your computer so the upgrade tool knows how to talk to Microsoft
Delete some old update files (this won’t delete your stuff!)
Restart the computer
Try the upgrade tool again
Step 1: Open the “Registry Editor”Think of this as a special notepad where Windows keeps its rules.
Click the Start button
In the little search box, type: regedit
Press Enter on your keyboard
If something pops up asking for permission, click Yes
Step 2: Turn On the Right SettingThis part may sound tricky, but just go slow:
In the window that just opened (called the Registry Editor), look at the left side — like folders.
Double-click the folders in this order:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
└── SOFTWARE
└── Microsoft
└── Windows
└── CurrentVersion
└── Internet Settings
└── WinHttp
Right-click on WinHttp, then choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value
Name it: DefaultSecureProtocols
Double-click the thing you just created, and enter this number: A00
Click OK and close the window
That’s it! We just helped your computer understand new security rules.
Step 3: Clean Up Old Update FilesOn your keyboard, press Windows + R (hold the ⊞ Windows key and press R)
A box will appear. Type this into it:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
Press Enter
A folder will open — press Ctrl + A to select everything, then right-click > Delete
Say “Yes” to any questions it asks
This deletes leftover stuff your computer doesn’t need.
Step 4: Restart the ComputerClick Start > Restart and wait for your PC to come back on.
Step 5: Try the Tool AgainNow double-click the file you downloaded earlier — the Windows 10 upgrade tool (it may be called MediaCreationTool.exe).
If it asks, right-click it and choose “Run as administrator.”
This time, it should open and work properly
