If you’re seeing Error 0xC004F074 during Windows activation, it means your PC is trying to activate through Microsoft's Key Management Service (KMS) — a method used in volume licensing environments. This can happen when a key is misinterpreted by the system or the activation attempt fails to reach Microsoft's servers.
Don’t worry — this is a known issue and easy to fix in most cases.
Why This Error HappensYou may encounter this error if:
Your Windows is attempting KMS (volume) activation, but your key is for Retail or OEM
Your system is misconfigured due to a prior activation attempt
You're using outdated or misaligned activation files
Your PC can't connect to Microsoft’s activation servers at the time
How to Fix ItA simple reboot often clears temporary conflicts and resets the activation attempt.
A working internet connection is required to reach Microsoft’s activation servers.
Go to Settings > System > Activation
Click Change product key
Enter the key you received from us and confirm
If normal activation fails, you can run a command manually:
Press Windows + R, type cmd, and right-click > Run as administrator
Type this command and press Enter:
slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
(replace with your actual key)
Then enter:
slmgr.vbs /ato
This tells Windows to install the key and attempt online activation directly.
